Additional Resources
The National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) within the U.S. National Science Foundation has a wealth of information on the U.S. science and engineering (S&E) enterprise, including additional data and analysis on degree recipients and degree-granting institutions. The latest information from NCSES is available at https://ncses.nsf.gov/.
Survey of Earned Doctorates
The data and information provided in the report Doctorate Recipients from U.S. Universities are derived from the Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED). The SED is an annual census of research doctorate recipients from U.S. academic institutions that collects information on educational history, demographic characteristics, and postgraduation plans. To learn more about the SED, visit the survey page for information on the survey’s methodology, questionnaire, and related products and information.
Data tools
NCSES data tools at ncsesdata.nsf.gov provide additional ways to interact with data from the Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED).
- The NCSES interactive data tool enables the creation of visualizations and custom tables from the SED and other NCSES surveys. To build a custom table using SED data, visit ncsesdata.nsf.gov/builder/sed.
- The SED Restricted Data Analysis System (RDAS) (ncsesdata.nsf.gov/rdas) expands public access to SED data through a secure platform to analyze a more comprehensive set of SED data items starting with the 2017 survey data. The SED RDAS uses statistical procedures to produce estimates that reflect the entire population of doctorate recipients while protecting confidentiality of individuals’ data.
