Why is ResearchDataGov.org (RDG) transitioning to a new SAP Portal?
We’re transitioning to a new, modernized Standard Application Process (SAP) Portal to improve usability, enhance system performance, and provide integrated support features. The new platform is designed to further streamline the application process for users and support future innovation. This change reflects our commitment to providing a more efficient, reliable, and user-friendly system for both agency staff and the public.
How will the transition work?
The transition will take place in phases to ensure a smooth and secure shift to the new platform. During this process, users will receive clear instructions and support for any required actions—such as account setup, application information migration, or updated login steps. Communication will be ongoing throughout the transition, with detailed timelines, FAQs, and training materials available on the SAP Web page. We will communicate details and instructions with users using their RDG e-mail on file. Support teams will be ready to assist with troubleshooting and to address any questions that arise.
When is the transition taking place?
The technical transition will occur over the coming months, with key milestones communicated in advance. RDG will be in a read-only state between 26 May 2026 and 15 June 2026. During the read-only state, users will be able to browse the metadata catalog but will not be able to start new applications or edit existing applications. Agency users will not be able to edit metadata or render decisions on applications. The projected completion date for the portal transition is 15 June 2026. Once the transition is complete, all application activity will occur on the new portal. Users will be notified well ahead of any important dates to ensure adequate preparation time and minimal disruption to normal operations. The figure below summarizes the portal transition timeline.
How long will SAP be frozen?
A system freeze will be in effect from 26 May 2026 to 15 June 2026. During that time, all applications will be in “read-only' mode.
What does "read-only" mean?
During the system freeze, applications will be in read-only mode. This means you can look at your application, but you won’t be able to edit it or submit applications or appeals.
Why can’t I submit my application right now?
During the system freeze, submissions will be temporarily unavailable. This is because the system and its data are being migrated to a new .gov domain, and no changes can be made during that process.
What if my application was under review?
During the system freeze, agencies cannot review applications or make decisions. Reviews will resume when the new system opens on 15 June 2026.
Will my review due date be extended?
Yes. Timelines will be adjusted to account for the system freeze.
How will I log in on 15 June 2026?
If you’re a current SAP user, your account will be moved to the new system. You’ll receive an e-mail with instructions on how to log in closer to the launch date.
Will I need a new username or password?
Current SAP users will keep their username in the new system. For security purposes, all users will need to set up a new password and multi-factor authentication in the new system.
